In the second round, Garcia gave the former No. 1 Maria Sharapova a scare with her big and angled shots that kept the Russian star running on the defence. Though Garcia won her first set, she lost to experienced Maria in the last set.

Following her noteworthy defeat, Andy Murray went on to his Twitter and praised the 17-year-old Garcia as he said, "She will be the No. 1 tennis player one day".

In 2013, Garcia faced defeat in both Australian and French Open; however, after receiving five wild card entries, she finally qualified for the Wimbledon marking her first Grand Slam qualification. She beat Zheng Jie in the 1st round but lost to Serena Williams in the next. In 2016, Garcia was a runner-up at the US Open while she sailed into the semifinal at the Australian Open that year.
