New York City Subway Upgrades in Limbo After MTA Halts Contracts

Modernizing New York’s more than 100-year-old transit network is at risk after the Metropolitan Transportation Authority suspended new construction contracts as funds for upgrades are in limbo.

While the MTA, which oversees the city’s subways, buses and commuter rail lines, has started work on expanding the Second Avenue subway to 125th Street and installing more elevators to improve accessibility, the momentum for those projects could wane as the transit agency — for now — won’t seek new contracts for such developments, according to a letter dated Wednesday that it sent to contractors, which was reviewed by Bloomberg News.
